Tesla Powerwall providing whole-home backup, fitted under the stairs
Backup Power

A power cut doesn't have to stop your house.

A standard solar battery shuts down the moment the grid goes off - it's a safety rule, so nobody gets hurt working on the network. Add a backup power supply and that changes: an EPS (Emergency Power Supply) function or an automatic changeover switch keeps your chosen circuits - or the whole house, if it's sized for it - running off the battery until the grid comes back, switching over in a fraction of a second. If you're on the end of a rural line around North Norfolk, or you just want the fridge, heating, broadband and lights to stay on, Wave Renewables can build it in, fitted and commissioned to the same standard as every job.

  • Automatic or manual changeover - no need to be home when it happens
  • Essential circuits only, or whole-home backup
  • Works with AC-coupled and DC hybrid inverter systems
  • Retrofits to many existing solar battery setups

How It Works

Grid drops, battery takes over.

The changeover switch - sometimes called an EPS switch - sits between the grid supply and your battery system and constantly watches the incoming mains. The instant it detects a failure, it isolates your home from the grid and connects it to the battery instead, so the protected circuits keep running. When the mains returns and stays stable, it switches back and the battery goes back to its normal job of storing your solar generation. A manual changeover switch works on the same principle but you throw it by hand - cheaper, and fine if you're usually home during an outage.

What To Keep On

Whole house, or just the essentials.

Essential circuits

Lighting, sockets for the fridge and freezer, the broadband router, heating controls and maybe a single kitchen socket. Cheapest to set up, and a given battery lasts far longer because the draw is small.

Whole-home backup

Everything runs as normal, within the limits of the inverter and battery. Needs a system sized to your peak demand - an electric shower or oven mid-outage is a big load - so the battery and inverter spec goes up, and so does the cost.

How long it lasts

Down to battery capacity and what you're running. A 10 kWh battery backing up essentials can run for many hours; backing up the whole house it's less. If you have solar, the battery also recharges in daylight during a longer outage.

Sizing it

We work backwards from what you actually want to keep on and for how long, then spec the battery, inverter and changeover switch to suit - rather than selling you more battery than you need.

Is It Worth It?

Depends how much a power cut costs you.

For most Norfolk and Suffolk homes, mains supply is reliable enough that backup is a nice-to-have. It earns its keep if you're somewhere outages are frequent or long, if you work from home, if there's medical equipment that has to stay powered, or if you keep a freezer full of stock. If any of that applies, adding an EPS or changeover switch to a battery you're fitting anyway is a modest extra on top - far cheaper than a standalone generator, and silent. We'll give you the real figure for your setup and let you decide.

Common Questions

Backup power FAQs.

Not on its own. A standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid fails, for the safety of anyone working on the network. To keep running during an outage you need an EPS (Emergency Power Supply) function or an automatic changeover switch added to the system.

A device that detects grid failure instantly and switches your home, or selected circuits, over to battery power without you doing anything. When the grid returns it switches back. A manual changeover switch does the same job but you operate it yourself.

Either. Whole-home backup needs a battery and inverter sized to your peak demand. Many people instead back up essential circuits only - lighting, fridge, router, heating controls - which is cheaper and lasts longer on the same battery. We size it around what you want to keep on.

An automatic changeover or EPS typically transfers in a fraction of a second - fast enough that lighting and most electronics stay on. Some sensitive equipment may briefly reset.

Often, yes. It depends on the inverter and battery you already have, and works with both AC-coupled and DC hybrid setups. We check compatibility on the site visit before quoting.
