Solar panels installed on a Norfolk roof
On-Roof Solar

Panels built for your roof.

Solar panel installation puts electricity generation on your own roof, cutting how much you buy from the grid and what you pay for it. Wave Renewables is a local solar installer covering Norwich, North Walsham and the rest of Norfolk and Suffolk, fitting MCS certified on-roof systems sized to your property, roof orientation and daily usage - not an off-the-shelf package. Every installation is engineer designed, with the survey, fit and commissioning personally overseen so the person who quotes you takes responsibility for the finished job.

Costs & Savings

What it costs, what it saves.

Every quote is itemised after a free site visit - but this is the shape of it: typical installed prices for Norfolk & Suffolk homes, with rough annual bill savings at today's electricity prices. These are wide guide ranges, not your price - roof access, panel choice and your actual usage move it up or down, and your quote will be exact.

Adding battery storage raises the yearly saving - you store daytime generation instead of exporting it cheaply and buying it back at night. Combined solar and battery installs start at £6,800. VAT on domestic solar and battery installations is currently 0%. Will It Work Here?

Is your roof right for solar?

Most Norfolk and Suffolk homes are fine. These are the four things we check on the site visit:

Direction

South is best, but east-west roofs still make solar worthwhile - generation is spread across the day rather than peaking at noon. A north-only roof usually isn't worth it.

Pitch

Roughly 30-40° is ideal. Flatter or steeper still works, and we can angle-mount on a flat roof.

Shading

Chimneys, trees and neighbouring buildings cost you generation. Panel-level optimisers or a revised layout recover most of it.

Roof condition

Panels last 25+ years, so the roof beneath needs to be sound. If it's near the end of its life, in-roof solar during a re-roof can make more sense.

The Kit

What we fit.

We fit a small range of equipment we trust and can support, rather than whatever's cheapest that month. As a Wave approved installer, panels are Aiko, Longi or JA Solar and inverters are Fox ESS, Tesla, Sigenergy or Sunsynk - matched to your property and budget.

  • Panels - tier-1 monocrystalline, Aiko / Longi / JA Solar, around 400-450W each
  • Inverter - hybrid, Fox ESS / Tesla / Sigenergy / Sunsynk, so battery storage can be added later without swapping it
  • Mounting - MCS-approved rail, roof hooks fixed into the rafters, not the battens
  • Warranty - 6-year MCS-approved workmanship warranty, plus manufacturer panel and inverter warranties
Getting Paid To Export

SEG export payments.

Electricity you generate but don't use is exported to the grid, and under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) your supplier pays you for it. Rates vary by tariff - typically around 12p per kWh, and up to ~15p on the best tariffs. An MCS certificate is required to claim, which is why every Wave Renewables install is MCS certified. A battery - or a cheaper solar power diverter that sends surplus to your hot water - lets you keep more of your own generation rather than exporting it cheaply, usually worth more than the export rate itself.

Common Questions

Solar panel installation FAQs.

As a guide, a smaller 3kW system typically runs £4,500-£6,000 installed, a 4-5kW system (the most common size) £6,500-£8,500, and a 6kW+ system £8,500-£11,000. These are wide guide ranges - roof access, panel choice and system spec move it up or down. Every quote is itemised after a free site visit - no vague estimates, no hidden extras. Domestic solar is currently 0% VAT.

Roughly £400-£600 a year on a 3kW system up to £900-£1,300 or more on a 6kW+ system, depending on how much electricity you use during daylight and your tariff. Adding a battery increases the saving because you use more of what you generate instead of exporting it.

It depends on roof access and system size. We agree a firm timeline with you at the site visit and work to that date.

Yes. South-facing gives the most generation, but east-west roofs are well worth it - output is spread across morning and afternoon rather than peaking at midday, which often matches household use better. A north-only roof is usually the exception where solar isn't worthwhile.

Yes, provided the system is fitted with a hybrid inverter - which is what we install as standard. That means battery storage can be added later without replacing the inverter.

Very little. Rain keeps them reasonably clean, and there are no moving parts. An occasional generation check via the inverter app is enough. If output drops, we handle solar repairs and fault finding.

Most domestic solar installations fall under permitted development and don't need planning permission. Listed buildings and some conservation areas are the main exceptions - we'll flag this during your site visit if it applies.

Yes. Wave Renewables is MCS certified for solar panel and battery storage installation, and NAPIT registered for electrical work, covering Norfolk and Suffolk. MCS certification is what lets you claim SEG export payments.
