Consumer unit upgrade in a Norfolk home
Consumer Unit Upgrades

Consumer units, upgraded to spec.

An outdated fuse box is one of the most common reasons Norfolk and Suffolk homes fail an electrical safety check - no RCD protection against shock, rewireable fuses instead of RCBO breakers, or circuits that can't handle a modern kitchen, an EV charger or battery storage. Wave Renewables replaces old boards with a fully compliant RCBO consumer unit, correctly rated and tested, and issues the certificate for it. Wave Renewables is NAPIT registered (Part P), covering Norwich, North Walsham and the rest of Norfolk and Suffolk, so notifiable work is registered with Building Control for you.

  • Consumer unit / fuse board upgrades and full replacements (RCBO)
  • Inspection & testing - EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) for homeowners and landlords
  • Fault finding - tracked down properly, not guessed at
  • New circuits, rewires and general domestic electrical work

Inside The Board

One switch that isolates the entire board - the first thing an electrician turns off to work safely. Old fuse boards usually have this, but little else on this list.

One per circuit - lights, sockets, cooker, shower - each rated in amps. They trip instantly on an overload or short and reset with a switch, replacing rewireable fuse wire that's slow and easy to fit at the wrong rating.

Detects electricity leaking to earth - through a person or a fault - and cuts power in under 40 milliseconds. It's the shock protection that pre-2000s fuse boards have none of, and the single biggest reason to upgrade.

Clamps voltage spikes from lightning or grid switching before they reach your electronics, boiler, EV charger or solar inverter. Now fitted as standard on most new boards.

What's covered.

EICR - inspection & testing

Landlords must have a valid EICR every 5 years by law, and provide a copy to tenants. Homeowners aren't required to, but it's a sensible check on an older property, before buying, or after an extension. We carry out the full test and issue the report - typically £150-£250 for a domestic property.

Consumer unit upgrades

Old rewireable or plastic boards replaced with a metal-clad unit with RCD/RCBO protection and, where needed, surge protection. Includes testing every circuit and the certificate. Usually £400-£800 depending on circuit count and board position.

Fault finding

Tripping RCDs, dead sockets, lights that flicker, a circuit that won't reset - diagnosed properly with test equipment, not guesswork, and a clear explanation of what's wrong and what it takes to fix.

Wiring & rewires

New circuits for kitchens, garden offices, outbuildings and EV chargers; partial and full rewires; extra sockets and lighting. All notified under Part P where required.

Usually £400-£800 depending on how many circuits you have, where the board is, and whether any circuits need remedial work to pass testing. We give a fixed, itemised quote after seeing the job.

Typically £150-£250 for a domestic property, depending on the number of circuits. You get the full report with any C1/C2/C3 codes explained and a quote for any remedial work.

Private landlords in England must have a valid EICR carried out at least every 5 years and give tenants a copy. Homeowners aren't legally required to, but it's strongly advised for older properties or before a purchase.

Signs include a wooden or plastic backboard, rewireable fuses with wire rather than switches, no RCD test button, cast-iron switches, or it tripping repeatedly. If you're adding an EV charger, solar or a battery, the board usually needs to be up to standard first.

Yes. Wave Renewables is NAPIT registered (Part P) for domestic electrical work across Norfolk and Suffolk, so notifiable work is registered with Building Control on your behalf.

Yes. We handle the electrical side of existing solar, battery and EV setups regardless of who fitted them - see repairs & faults.

For a consumer unit change the power is off for a few hours, so it helps to be in. An EICR needs access to every room with a socket or light. We agree timings with you in advance.

Consumer unit and EICR price ranges are indicative UK averages from Checkatrade cost guides (September 2026). We give a fixed quote after seeing the job.
